In January 2021, after WhatsApp updated their privacy policy, the Telegram messenger app reportedly became the most downloaded non-gaming app of 2021, followed by TikTok. More than 63 million people downloaded the app, revealed Sensor Tower in its report. This spike was the ripple effect of people shifting to alternative platforms after WhatsApp updated their privacy policy.

According to Sensor Tower countries with the most downloads was India at 24 percent, followed by Indonesia and China. In its December 2020 report, Sensor Tower revealed that Telegram stood at ninth place, whereas WhatsApp was at third globally in Google and Apple stores. However, WhatsApp went from the third position to the seventh in January 2021.

In a statement, WhatsApp said that they had delayed the controversial update till May 2021, and the update allows users that can message directly with the businesses. The privacy update has nothing to do with the personal conversations of the users. It is protected with end-to-end encryption.
