The Federal Investigation Agency has arrested members of the group involved in a deceitful scam of issuing SIMs using a fake biometric verification system.
The standard biometric machine used the heat pulse to detect and scan the prints captured from the thumb placed on the sensor for verification. In contrast, the device being used by the group verify the prints taken on any surface and the paper.
The group revealed during interrogation they were using the machine to take verification prints on the paper and issuing SIMs fraudulently. The fake device was deliberately used to give more than 200,000 SIMs of various cellular networks through fake verification across Punjab.
During the interrogation process, it was also revealed that to meet the quota set by various cellular networks’ thumbprints of widows and uneducated people were taken after giving them ghee, flour, sugar, and other food items.
The FIA conducted a forensic examination of the biometric machine after it apprehended the suspects. The sims issued through this fraud are being mostly used illegally through social media. FIA cyber-crime wing is also facing difficulty because they are dealing with thousands of sexual harassment cases. Still, they are being delayed because of the SIMs, and when they get them verified, it turns out they have been issued through fake biometric scans.
The FIA is also investigating who tampered with the machine and making efforts to apprehend the person behind it. The suspects are employees of various mobile network services franchises or former staff members of the companies fired on fraud charges. Most of them were arrested in Sargodha, Lahore and Faisalabad, and dozens of fake machines and SIMs were also seized from them.
